  • Stress Reduction

  • Mindfulness meditation has been empirically shown to deliver a stronger immune system, improved sleep, lower blood pressure, and a healthier heart, among many other positive effects.

  • Researchers from Brown University say they’ve uncovered evidence suggesting that “dispositional mindfulness” is directly associated with scores on four of seven cardiovascular health indicators, and better health overall.

  • City Life

  • Mindful commuters in America say deep breaths help clear their minds and keep them calm under the stress of daily commutes.

  • Education

  • Mindfulness practices have already been used to good effect to help children concentrate in classrooms.
  • The Liberal Democrat MP David Laws, as Minister of State for Schools in the Department for Education, was very interested in promoting mindfulness in UK classrooms.
  • Wellington College, a British private school in Berkshire , has a mindfulness programme as part of it's school culture.
  • Mary Speakman, head teacher at Altrincham Girls Grammar School, UK, said that mindfulness techniques had proved popular with her students.
  • The principal at the UK school Bethnal Green academy, Mark Keary, supported the establishing of mindfulness in the school, especially when he learned it could lead to improved concentration during lessons. The school, recently judged "outstanding" by Ofsted, serves a deprived area.
  • The Dharma primary school - a Buddhist school in Brighton, UK, uses mindfulness to good effect in the classroom - calming the class in just 2 minutes of relaxed focus on the breath.
  • Social mobility is being improved as mindfulness meditation is taught in schools based in impoverished neighbourhoods - allowing young people from difficult backgrounds to be able to pay attention in classes and get the grades they need to improve their future prospects.
  • A study in 2013 found that a group of US undergraduates improved their average GRE test scores by 16% compared to a control group, after taking a mindfulness meditation course.

  • Government

  • Labour MP Chris Ruane is the biggest advocate of using mindfulness in the British parliament - he meditates daily. Mindfulness is also offered to parliament's employees as well as the staff at the Department of Health.
  • Members of the parliament have tried mindfulness meditation - among them former ministers Lord Haworth and Jim Fitzpatrick, with Lord Andrew Stone and Tracey Crouch MP admitting to have a mindfulness practice.
  • Labour MP David Lammy tried mindfulness meditation as part of a health and wellbeing challenge.
  • US Congressman for Ohio Tim Ryan is the biggest advocate of mindfulness meditation in US government circles and has even written a book titled A Mindful Nation after he realized he needed to make a change before he became just another burnt-out politician.
  • Greater London Authority started promoting mindfulness podcasts to it's staff in May 2014.

  • Workforce

  • Studies in Journal of Applied Psychology have shown increased job satisfaction when mindfulness has been taught to workers.
  • Silicon Valley and especially Google (with their 'Search Inside Yourself') programme values mindfulness meditation practice for it's workforce.
  • In 2013, the Bank of England offered it's workforce a mindfulness meditation course.
  • Google's head of mindfulness says that if bosses encourage their workforce to exercise in order to stay healthy then this is seen as normal, and soon bosses encouraging their employees to practice mindfulness will be seen as normal.
  • Where mindfulness meditation is being used to good effect by employers, positive relationships in the workplace are becoming championed over a sense of purpose.
  • Intel have made a 9 week mindfulness course available to all it's employees.
  • Linda Kazanova, chief human resources officer at US-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, says: “Mindfulness is . . . part of having a healthy, balanced workplace."
  • Financiers in the City of London are now using mindfulness meditation to cope with the stress of their jobs.
  • The Fortune 500 corporation, General Mills, which markets brands such as Betty Crocker, Yoplait, Green Giant, Old El Paso, Häagen-Dazs, Cheerios, and Lucky Charms, has meditation rooms for it's workforce after investing in mindfulness meditation courses.
  • McKinsey , KPMG, Barclays, Apple Computer, Yahoo!, Procter & Gamble, and Starbucks have also invested in mindfulness training for their employees.

  • Leadership

  • Arianna Huffington, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, and Twitter cofounder Evan Williams say they run their enterprises mindfully.
  • In amongst all the talk of boosting the global economy at the 2013 World Economic Forum in Davos, mindfulness appeared on the programme for the first time.
  • Ed Catmull, President of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, practices mindfulness meditation and has brought in courses for Pixar employees.
  • Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio has said, “Meditation more than anything in my life was the biggest ingredient of whatever success I’ve had.”

  • Sports and Fitness

  • 2012 Olympic gold medallist in the women’s 25-meter pistol, Kim Jang-mi of South Korea, credited her success to Buddhist mindfulness training.
  • Top world tennis player Novak Djokovic says the secret to his tennis – and his life away from the court – is mindfulness meditation.
  • Miami Dolphins player Ricky Williams does mindfulness meditation very morning and before every game and teaches mindfulness at Nova Southeastern University.
  • NBA coach Phil Jackson taught his teams mindfulness in order to help them build mental strength.
  • Sports psychologist Michael Gervais worked with Olympic volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh and dozens of other athletes.
  • Sports psychologist and meditation teacher George Mumford worked with NBA Championship team the Chicago Bulls, during the Michael Jordan years. He's also been involved with the Los Angeles Lakers. He specialized in getting the team into 'the zone'.

  • Parents who use mindfulness can conserve their energy better using mindfulness as a tool.
  • Meditation for children has been used as an effective tool to curb childrens' evening tantrums.

  • Recovery from Sickness

  • Mindfulness has been used effectively for chronic pain relief.
  • Although the US medical industry has not embraced the cheap option of mindfulness fully yet, there continues to be more and more evidence that mindfulness complements medicine practices - bringing much-needed relief to a variety of patients.

  • Military

  • Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training" or "M-Fit" was designed by former U.S. Army Capt. Elizabeth Stanley, a professor at Georgetown University who found relief doing yoga and meditation for her PTSD. The US military has been searching for ways to reduce strains on service members burdened with more than a decade of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • US marines who are taught mindfulness techniques report that they are better able to cut through the confusion of battle to distinguish between civilians and fighters.

  • Mindfulness has been useful in dealing with chocolate addiction.
  • Studies on urges to eat sweets showed that sweet consumption lowered when participants where practicing mindfulness.

  • Prisons

  • Matt Tenney, author of Serve to be Great, spent five and a half-years in prison, during which he began practicing mindfulness meditation and he says he found more happiness in prison than he had ever found before in his entire life. He became a monk practicing in his cell for the last 3 years of his sentence.

  • Entertainment Celebrities

  • Gwyneth Paltrow - actress - subscribes to the online mindfulness program 'Headspace'.
  • Katy Perry - singer - practices zen meditation to help her with her performances.
  • Emma Watson - actress - subscribes to the online mindfulness program 'Headspace', and tweeted her fans about it encouraging them to have a go.
  • Ruby Wax - TV presenter and comedian - holds a Masters Degree in mindfulness from Oxford University.
  • Davina McCall - TV presenter - subscribes to the online mindfulness program 'Headspace'.
  • Goldie Hawn - actress - heads a social and emotional literacy program revolving around mindfulness, called MindUP.
  • Jerome Flynn - actor - practices mindfulness and has shared his enthusiasm with highschool students at a local school.
